Like the other former Soviet republics, Uzbekistan’s economy is dominated by oligarchs. These businessmen maintain their positions in Uzbekistan through political influence, often through family connections to the President or senior officials. Some officials are also becoming staggeringly wealthy by using their positions in government for their own enrichment.
